TINY TOWN, USA – This past week marked the opening of the Madison-Bouckville antique show with its carnival atmosphere and its marvels: lots of "negro" collectibles, cowboy and indian figurines fighting on the same side for once ... Betty Boop and the Tin Man ... pink ponies; macabre dummies sans ventriloquist ... great striped tents dozens of yards long full of vendors grousing about weather, about exhaustion, hawking wares ... in the distance dreamy modern windmills turning dollars in the breezes high above the undulating farmlands ... Amish boys and girls in blue utility clothes bidding on 19th century farm implements to work their black dirt ... closer to home it was high time to go shirtless, strip off the wife beaters and display that redneck tan ... Tiny Town now has its own semi-pro football team called ... ummm the Ithaca Tompkins County Aggression ...  TRUE !  .... light reflecting in the waters as evening comes sooner still each day ... crazy water running the crazy creeks after crazier storms have passed ... summer in high idle and the last waltz on a commons thursday night ... fair weather clouds and hot work spreading hot asphalt on hot roads in the hot sun ... night in the high summer alley and a city groaning as it bears the burden of another influx tourists, students, strangers to this place ... Tiny Town ... bugger all bugger all ... and then at last the Glum Queen arrives to bless us ... and we are reborn ...

TINY TOWN, USA – Following a stormy Monday area creeks, generally mild in flow being controlled by almighty man-people, surged in a variety of flavors.

Buttermilk Creek turned into Chocolate Milk Falls. Cascadilla into Sarsparilla. Fall Creek into Malted Milk Falls. And so on ...

An intrepid local photographer dared to assay the degree of natural excitement in the seething soda waters of Sarsparilla despite being warned by a drowning man that the path was flooded-out up yonder and an avalanche imminent.

Not possessed of life saving or water safety skills nor the sense to turn back, the shutterbug wisely let nature take its course and the man was swept downstream into the city water supply. When the adventurer regained cell phone contact with the world up in China Town (clearly having survived), he reported to 9-1-1 dispatchers that a log had been talking to him and so spent the night in the community Psyche Ward being evaluated by a mental health team. When it was learned a talking log actually was discovered by a group of dragon boat pirates the following day, he was released with apologies, the case was dismissed and everyone involved are now the best of friends.

This slideshow gives you some sense of the water's momentum and its changeability. At times it resembles dog fur, at other times it resembles cat fur, a cat with really long fur and we now suggest an alternate name for the stream, "Angora Creek." Other times it resembles the back of the heads of aged Grateful Dead fans, as well as vomit. But we think Vomit Falls or Upchuck Creek or even Shit's Creek, to be repulsive if at times precise when one is up it without a handy tool like a paddle.

Versed in the craft of the photographic arts, the unsullied soul-snatcher captured strange visions and it is no surprise that a night in the boobie hatch and a thorough debriefing with social workers was essential in order to set him back on the path of reason in the sunlight of the spirit. Amen.

–– C. Penbroke Handy
